Swim Lessons
The Y is “America’s Swim Instructor” and the most accessible community resource to prevent drowning and encourage a lifelong enjoyment of swimming.

Water Exercise
Pool Information and Rules
- Pool average water temperature: 83 degrees F.*
- Pool length: 25 yards. 66 lengths = 1 mile.
- Pool depth in lap lanes: 3 1/2 – 5 feet.
- Pool depth in the mushroom area: 2 – 3 1/2 feet.
- Whirlpool average water temperature: 103 degrees F.*
* At the Y, we work hard to accommodate all who use the pool and whirlpool. Please keep in mind the temperature will fluctuate due to patron load, humidity level, and air temperature. We do our best to maintain this but depending on these external factors, there will always be some variance in temperature.
A lifeguard is always on duty for your safety.
Patrons under the age of 18 are not allowed in the hot tub.
7 and under must always be within arm’s reach of their adult.
8-17 must take a deep-water test to be in the pool deeper than their armpits.
8-12 A responsible adult must always be on the pool deck.
13-17 Must take a deep-water test. Supervision follows the YMCA of the Northwoods building rules.
No shoes beyond the tan drains that lead to the sewers. We want to keep dirt, salt, sand, and animal feces out of the pool.
No diving
No prolonged breath holding (guideline: 10 seconds or no more than ½ the length of the pool (whichever is shorter).
Do not enter the pool if you have a communicable disease or an open cut.
Shower immediately before entering the pool after use of the sauna, or toilet facilities.
Do not run or engage in rough play in the pool area.
Do not bring animals into the pool area.
No public displays of affection.
Children who are not toilet-trained must wear swim diapers. These are available for purchase at our Pro Shop.
No diaper changing on the pool deck.
No persons under the influence of drugs or alcohol are permitted at the YMCA of the Northwoods, including the whirlpool, pool, and sauna.
Swimsuits, rash guards, and other attire meant for swimming are allowed. Polyester shirts are allowed as a cover-up in addition to swimsuits.
Water shoes that are only used in pools are allowed.
A shower is required before entering the pool or whirlpool.
Phones are only allowed in the observation areas. No photos or videos of people can be taken without the expressed consent of the Aquatics Director or Deck Supervisor.
Phones are prohibited in the pool, whirlpool, and sauna.
- Mermaid tails/Mono-fins.
- Scuba equipment (contact Aquatics Director for possible exceptions).
- Full face snorkels
- No mermaid tails or mono-fins.
- Food/Gum/Beverages.
- Non-U.S. Coast Guard-approved floaties (such as baby floats, arm bands, etc.
- Please refrain from bringing toys from home.
- Glass and shatterable items are prohibited in the pool area, including glass goggles.
- WARNING: Water depth is 3’ to 4’1” in the plunge area. Water near the bottom of the slide is approximately 3’6”.
- Follow the instructions of the attendant.
- Riders must be a minimum of 48″ tall and a good swimmer.
- No life jackets or goggles allowed on the slide.
- No double riders on the slide.
- The maximum weight limit is 250 pounds.
- No standing in the drop zone.
- Leave the plunge area immediately after using the slide.
People suffering from heart disease, diabetes, or high or low blood pressure should consult their physician before using a whirlpool.
Persons under the influence of alcohol or drugs may not use the whirlpool.
Pregnant women should consult their physician regarding whirlpool usage.
Lengthy exposure may be hazardous to your health and may result in nausea, dizziness, or fainting. YMCA staff reserve the right to ask people who are experiencing these symptoms that indicate physical danger to exit the hot tub.
Do not submerge or float.
No patrons under the age of 18 may be in the hot tub, including hands and feet.
